The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and is the key to unlocking scholarships, grants, and federal student aid. You should complete it each year you’ll be attending college on the Department of Education’s website

Federal student loans are issued by the U.S. government. The government utilizes various servicers to handle billing and other aspects of the loans.

Private student loans are issued by credit unions, banks, and other finance companies, who may service the loans themselves or use another party for servicing.

Student loan forgiveness/debt relief is a benefit of federal student loans that cancels a remaining balance of certain loans if you meet the criteria. You may be eligible to have a portion of your loans forgiven if you work in public service.

Private student loans are not eligible for these programs offered by the U.S. Department of Education.
